Qatar contemplates building an Atlantean-style underwater theme park. News
Qatar resort developers are currently in talks with a US company to open an Atlantean-style underwater amusement park here, the artificial reef developer announced.
Based in Los Angeles Reef worlds was quoted in local media today saying they have started discussions with two developers in Qatar. The names of the waterfront developers and the proposed location of the park have not been disclosed.
The company said the establishment of artificial reefs was one way to expand the $ 3 billion global snorkel and diving market. The Doha project would be part of Reef Worlds’ broader emphasis on creating similar parks in the Gulf, including in Dubai.
While no potential park locations have been discussed, this may be part of a new waterfront project outside of Doha, called See the development of Lusail, which has been described by DP Architects’ main planners as “a year-round playground”.
In addition to shops and hotels, this project – with no set deadline – is expected to include entertainment, leisure and cultural activities.
A few details
Explaining the company’s interest in Qatar, Dave Taylor, Reef Worlds’ chief development officer, was cited on the Peninsula saying:
“Qatar has a unique tourism problem that we deal with. When you consider the 350 miles of Qatar’s coast, scuba diving and underwater exploration are not on the Top Ten list, yet they are found almost everywhere in the world. We want Qatar to be on the world tourism scene. “
According to the company, the reef sites are created by a team of Hollywood designers to look like ancient Lost Cities and help rebuild regional reef habitats.
But many details still need to be hashed. Speaking to Gulf Times, a spokesman for the company said: “We are at the stage of a Memorandum of Understanding and have yet to sign contracts – yet.”
Earlier this month, a Los Angeles-based company announced plans to build the Pearl of Dubai, which has been recognized as the world’s largest sustainable underwater tourism facility.
Started in the development of The World, the underwater park was apparently modeled after the mythical lost city of Atlantis and the Pirates of the Caribbean.
No date has been given when this park will open.
Amusement parks in Qatar
Qatar’s first amusement park, Water park on Salwa Road, opened in 2010 and with 15 water attractions.
The facility is popular with families, but is often compared to other, more extensive water parks in Dubai and elsewhere in the region.
Many new theme parks are expected to open in Qatar in the coming years as part of Qatar’s attempt to expand its offer to tourists from all over the world.
Last month, developers under construction Qatar’s shopping center in Al Rayaan announced a range of family entertainment deals, including Angry Birds amusement park for young children.
The $ 824 million complex, slated for completion by the end of next year, is also set to have Formula 1 racing and Cirque du Soleil style acrobatic theater. There is also a space-themed attraction for older children.
Its goal is to increase the number of international visitors to Qatar from 1.2 million in 2012 to 7 million by 2030.
